ESL (English as a Second Language)

Students eligible for ESL instruction are tested for placement in the appropriate level class.  Placement is determined by the state-mandated WIDA MODEL test.  This is a required course for those students who fall below the state cut-off number.  Multiple criteria are used to determine when a student is ready to exit the program: ACCESS for ELL test, teacher recommendation, and other standardized tests.

Students are instructed in the four areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Students are taught academic language and learning strategies that will enable them to succeed throughout their high school education.   The students are given intensive instruction in English in a small group setting that allows for a community of learners to succeed during their high school years.
