Tinc Road celebrates the joy of reading

Two cohorts = twice the fun!

Read Across America Day, the national reading celebration held annually on the birthday of Dr. Seuss, is normally a week-long event at Tinc Road. But with in-person instruction split into two alternating cohorts, the festivities and focus on reading lasted for two weeks. Spirit days were repeated, giving students at home and in person two opportunities to wear their favorite hats/Seuss hats and dress as their favorite book characters, among other fun dress-up days.

This year, the reading celebration had a distinctly local theme: pirates – a nod to the district mascot, the marauder. Each day, students were digitally sent a treasure map which they could access at home or in school as directed by their teachers. On each map were book landmarks; clicking on a book brought up a video pop-up window of a teacher or member of the school community reading the chosen book aloud. In past years, guest readers visited the school to personally read to students.

“We wanted to bring the school and the community together even though we are apart because of this pandemic,” said Christina Capone, Tinc Road’s reading specialist and coordinator of the schoolwide RAA events. “The reading videos were geared to not only emphasize the enjoyment of reading, but also give parents ways to add fun reading strategies at home.”

Since 2021 is the 150th anniversary of the township of Mount Olive, historical information about the town and school district were also included on the treasure maps each day. By clicking on a marauder icon, students would see slide show presentations and photos about Mount Olive, then and now.

The school parent organization and the Education Association of Mount Olive kicked off Tinc Road’s reading celebration. The PTO raised more than $17,000 through a read-a-thon. Online donations – which came from areas all over the world including Denmark, the UK, and Canada – were made for students reading at home. More than 70,000 minutes of reading time was logged during the event. The money raised will be used for an outdoor classroom.

A grant from the education association funded the purchase of two books for every student in the school – that's nearly 1,000 in total. Capone selected the titles, choosing appropriate-level books for each grade.

School counselor Lisa Barba and school nurse Geri Sullivan arranged the guest readers.

Teachers Sharon Enea and Laura Iacampo compiled the historical information and created the presentations.
